The United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) was set up in 1992. Part of this is the Conference of Parties (COP) system where signatories to the Convention negotiate on climate change. COP21, held in Paris in December 2015, resulted in the Paris Agreement – the first fully global treaty on climate change.
The Paris Agreement was signed in April 2016 and deals with GHG emission mitigation, adaptation and finance from 2020; it also adopts a pledge and review system discussed in earlier meetings and championed by the USA and China.
