Creating green careers

Ange Hughes wouldn’t describe herself as a trailblazer. But for her colleagues enrolled in Speedy Hire’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Partnership Programme, she’s living proof that opportunity abounds for all in the green economy.

As Speedy Hire ramped up its commitment to sustainability several years ago, it looked in-house for staff to drive its strategy to reduce environmental impact, improve social responsibility and strengthen governance. Ange jumped at the chance; retraining and upskilling to become a Policy, Governance and Compliance Manager in ESG.

She says: “I didn’t expect to have such an exciting opportunity at this stage of my career. But it’s about understanding what transferable skills you have and identifying the green training options that are out there. At Speedy Hire, we’re committed to opening the door to the green economy to everyone and I think I’m proof of that.”

Speedy Hire has now identified a further 30 people from across its business to follow in Ange’s footsteps. These people will be upskilled and own the ESG plan relevant to each of their business units.

They’re the first cohort in a process that will see ESG become part of everybody’s job at Speedy Hire, following Ange’s transformative lead.
