The RSPB is a charity dedicated to the conservation of birds and nature. The organisation brings together people who love birds and other wildlife and who want to take action to restore the health and diversity of the natural world.

Connecting people and nature: a new vision for urban green spaces
For many, access to nature isn’t always easy. But places like RSPB Sandwell Valley are changing that. As an urban nature reserve, it brings green spaces within reach, offering a place to explore, learn, and reconnect with the natural world.
Bejohn Quigley, Site Manager at RSPB Sandwell Valley, shares that the impact of his work is what drives him. Managing the 10-hectare reserve means overseeing the visitor centre, supporting conservation projects, and making nature more accessible to the community.
Annice Riggott, a placement volunteer from the University of Birmingham, never imagined she’d be working on a nature reserve. Studying social anthropology, she’s exploring how green spaces can support community well-being. “I always thought I’d be stuck in an office job in the city. Instead, I get to walk through nature every morning and apply my studies in a way that really matters.”
Careers in conservation come from all kinds of backgrounds. Bejohn started in hospitality before retraining in wildlife conservation, proving that pathways into the sector are as diverse as the roles themselves.
